New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the request of the high-power committee headed by former Chief Justice of India R.M. Lodha to replace IPS officer B.B. Mishra with Vivek Priyadarshi, SP (Anti-Corruption) to probe into the role of former IPL chief operating officer Sundar Raman. A bench of Justices T.S. Thakur and Ibrahim Kalifulla passed this order on an application from Gopal Sankaranarayanan, secretary of the Committee saying that Mishra had retired from service on March 31.
Counsel Senthil Jegadeesan submitted that Priyadarshi might be appointed on the same terms and conditions as per the May 16 order last year. The bench directed the competent authority to provide his services to the committee along with a team of officers of Priyadrshi’s choice. The bench said, “The committee will have all investigative powers, including search and seizure of relevant documents and recording evidence, but cannot carry out arrests.”
By an order dated January 22, the apex court had directed the committee to probe into the role of Sundar Raman and if found guilty, impose a suitable punishment upon him on behalf of the BCCI. It is also going into the nature of punishment to be given to Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals as their team officials Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of former BCCI chief N. Srinivasan, and Raj Kundra were found guilty of betting on IPL matches.
When Justice Thakur asked about the progress of the working of the panel, counsel Senthil Jegadeesan said it was on the right track and they had already examined BCCI officials and others. The panel has been asked to make suitable recommendations to the BCCI for such reforms in its practices and procedures and such amendments in the Memorandum of Association, Rules and Regulations.
