Chennai: A bank employee died and her techie husband suffered grievous burn injuries after the woman set herself on fire following a domestic quarrel on Saturday night at Puzhal. The woman, Revathi, 29, worked as an assistant manager in a private bank, and her husband, Arjunan, worked in an IT company. The couple was residing at Surapet, near Puzhal, with their five-year-old daughter. The police suspect that personal differences between the couple had led to their taking the extreme step, though Arjunan told the police it was an accident.
Their daughter was sent to her grandmother’s house in Kolathur on Saturday morning. The neighbours, who heard the loud screams from the house of the couple, rushed there to see both in flames. The two were rushed to a nearby hospital from where they were later referred to a government hospital. While Revathi, with 90 per cent burns, died in the hospital, Arjunan is battling for life.
He told the police that they were trying to switch on the TV when a spark caused the fire. “But from the circumstances and the injuries, we can’t believe his version,” said the police. They suspect that Revathi set herself on fire during a quarrel between the couple and Arjunan was also injured while trying the save her. Arjunan was an employee of a software firm in an IT park at Porur, while Revathi was working in a bank in Kodambakkam.
