Bengaluru: Mumbai Indians finally registered their first win of the season, beating the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 18 runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Sunday.
After putting up a mammoth 209 for 7, the visitors restricted the hosts to 191 for 7 in the stipulated overs. RCB began the chase very slow, with Chris Gayle scoring just 10 from 24 balls. Late charges from A.B. de Villiers (41 in 11 balls) and David Wiese (47 not out in 25 balls) were in vain.
Mumbai rode on fifties from Lendl Simmons and Unmukt Chand to pile a massive total. Electing to bowl with four major changes to their starting line-up from the previous game, Kohli opened with Iqbal Abdullah, who replaced pacer Harshal Patel. The left-arm spinner was off to a brilliant start but Varun Aaron’s horrendous first over resulted in 11 runs.
Mumbai toyed with RCB’s toothless bowling attack as openers Lendl Simmons (59, 44b, 9x4, 2x6) and Parthiv Patel smashed 24 runs off Aaron’s two overs. Coming in place of Sean Abbot, Wiese’s slower one crashed into Patel’s stumps, breaking the runaway 35-ball 47-run association for the opening wicket.
