THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The mouthpiece of Congress party in Kerala Veekshanam has hailed the elevation of Sitaram Yechury as CPM general secretary.

Showering huge praises on Yechury, the editorial hailed him as a democratic and warm leader of the Left. Though he takes over the reins of a sinking ship, Yechury is certainly a trustworthy leader during the present ‘fascist’ phase of Indian politics.

The editorial noted that not just his pragmatic approach towards politics, even on a personal front Yechury comes up as a warm and affectionate person to people cutting across political affiliations.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi had once said; “To know mo-re about the communist parties and understand Left politics, I always approach Sitaram Yechury. And he clears all my doubts with brotherly affection.”

The editorial pointed out that Yechury is someone who had serious differences with the party on the issue of nuclear deal and Somnath Chatterjee’s expulsion.

Since then he had been treading a different course and the difference with leadership had widened post 2014 debacle, it said. It said when former general secretary Prakash Karat tried to hide his leadership failure by attributing party’s electoral debacle to political tactical line, Yechury came up with alternative document to counter it.

Though he tried to convince the party that Karat was wrong and political tactical line was correct, there were not many takers, the editorial pointed out.

The editorial concluded that though the Kerala unit led by Pinarayi Vijayan tried its best to block his elevation as general secretary, his election clearly demonstrated that there is sizeable section within the party which supported Yechury's line.
