Chennai: BJP senior and Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping and party state president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan have strongly condemned the incidents of attacks on Brahmin priests and snapping of their sacred thread by the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam members, saying such acts were “cowardly.”Coming down heavily on the attackers, Mr Radhakrishnan said it has become a fashion among the DK members to indulge in such despicable acts and then invoke the name of rationalist Periyar.
“Attacking the 80-year-old Brahmin priest Vishwanathan Gurukal and other Brahmins is a cowardly act… this will result in serious consequences,” he warned. Calling upon all the political parties to come together and condemn such incidents, Dr Tamilisai said, “Those who disturb peace should be punished severely by law. These are cowardly acts that deserve strong condemnation.”
The Gurukkal of the Madhava Perumal temple in Mylapore was pushed to the ground, attacked and his sacred thread cut, while Santhanam Gopalan, aged 71, was roughed up and his sacred thread was also cut in West Mambalam. Both were injured in the attack.
“I was shocked to hear Dravidar Viduthalai cadres attacked an 80-year-old Brahmin priest and another elderly man and cut their ‘poonal.’ These are cowardly acts that deserve strong condemnation,” the state president said. Interfering in the personal beliefs of individuals was not right, she said while condemning the incidents.
