Chennai: A life convict, who recently jumped parole and was re-arrested, committed suicide in Puzhal prison on Tuesday. The convict, Jayakumar (39) of Vyasarpadi, had allegedly threatened a retired inspector after which the officer sought police protection. Prison officials said Jayakumar took the extreme step after he was denied parole to meet his family. “The officials cited his jumping parole recently as the reason for denying him permission to leave the prison, following which he took the extreme step,” a police officer said.

He was found hanging from the iron grille door of his cell. The Puzhal police rushed to the spot and moved Jayakumar’s body to government Stanley hospital for post-mortem. Jayakumar was granted parole on February 22 to meet his family when he escaped. Sembium police arrested him again last month, on March 26, and sent him back to Puzhal.
Meanwhile, retired police inspector P. Sukumar approached J.J. Nagar police, demanding protection, claiming that Jayakumar jumped parole only to kill him, after which he was provided an armed guard for security.

The inspector was part of a special team which arrested Jayakumar in connection with at least three murder cases in 2007. He was attached to the Thirumangalam police station then, the police said. Subsequently, Jayakumar was awarded life sentence and Sukumar was transferred out of the city and last served as inspector at Krishnagiri district and retired in 2010.

After his retirement in 2010, the inspector had produced evidence in court in relation to a particular case when the accused threatened the cop. “I will come for your life,” Jayakumar had told the inspector, following which the inspector sought protection.
