Hyderabad: If French car maker Renault is to be believed, the Indian auto industry is still driven by diesel vehicles despite the difference in petrol-diesel rates getting leaner every year. Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of Lodgy in the city, Renault vice president (sales and marketing) Rafael Treguer said, “There is still a big demand for diesel cars in India. Nearly 90-95 per cent of diesel variant of Duster is sold in the market.”
However, “it depends on a particular model,” says a top official of Tata Motors on the condition of anonymity. “Over 90 per cent of diesel variant of Indica is sold in the market while the proportion is nearly 50 per cent for Zest and Bolt. Though, for passenger car segment, the market sells 70 per cent of petrol cars,” the official added.
Renault will be launching a compact hatch in the latter part of the year, in a bid to achieve 5 per cent market share from the current share of two per cent. It will also roll out its used car business, which is currently at the pilot stage. Also, it had in February launched an in-house finance company. The company had launched five models in 18 months since entering the Indian automobile industry in 2011.
