Farmer suicide: Home minister Rajnath Singh blames AAP
Noting that farmers cannot be left to fend for themselves, PM said a detailed assessment
New Delhi: The agrarian crisis and the suicide of a farmer from Rajasthan in full public glare in the heart of the nation’s capital on Wedne-sday rocked Parliament on Thursday, with the blame game escalating among parties on the issue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, made an appeal for a collective solution to the “deep-rooted” agrarian crisis facing the country, as he expressed “pain” over the suicide of Gajendra Singh, a farmer from Dausa in Rajasthan, who took his life at the AAP rally that was addressed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Union home minister Rajnath Singh squarely blamed the AAP for the incident, saying its supporters had “clapped and raised slogans”, and prevented the police from trying to prevent the farmer from taking the extreme step.
In an FIR, the Delhi police also accused the AAP and its leaders of having instigated Gajendra Singh to commit suicide and putting all sorts of obstacles in their efforts to rescue him.
Mr Modi made a statement on the floor of the Lok Sabha, saying these problems are “deep-rooted” and must be addressed collectively, for which he was open to suggestions.
Noting that farmers cannot be left to fend for themselves, the Prime Minister said a detailed assessment would have to be made about the “shortcomings” that occurred before his government came to power, as well as during his tenure.
