Plea in Supreme Court over increasing farmer suicides
'State governments should take necessary measures for development of farm sector'
New Delhi: Expressing anguish and serious concern over the suicide of a farmer from Rajasthan in the capital on April 22 in front of large number of people, the Supreme Court has been moved on Friday for a direction to the Central and state governments to take immediate steps to prevent farmers suicides.
Advocate G.S. Mani in his public interest writ petition sought the apex court’s intervention due to the lack of measures taken by the Centre and the states for the welfare of farmers.
The petitioner has sought a series of directions which include to call for the records and details from the respondents Central and states governments regarding the farmers suicides since 1995 and action taken by them; and to frame the guidelines for the Central and state governments to prevent farmers suicide.
