75 per cent of the city do not have speed limit signs.

Hyderabad: While there has been no respite from the Traffic Police issuing speeding tickets, 75 per cent of the city do not have speed limit signs.

Long stretches of roads like Begumpet, SD road and Ameerpet do not have a single speed limit sign. Placement of boards in selected locations has in fact confused commuters.

The city has a speed limit of 20 to 50 km per hour on most of the main roads, depending on the road conditions and alignments.

Police say that the boards have been placed on roads that are currently being monitored for over speeding.

Meanwhile, on the PVNR, it can be anywhere between 20 km and 60 km per hour and on the ORR the speed limit is 120 km per hour.

But since only a few select roads have the speed limit signs, motorists are not in the habit of looking out for them.

“I was surprised to receive an over-speeding challan. I did not have a clue that the Punjagutta flyover even had a speed limit. I do not remember seeing it anywhere. Even if there are boards, they are placed in a manner so that people miss them,” said Prashant Nayar.

Speeding violations are caught by speed guns installed at different locations each day by the traffic police.

These are rotated between various locations in the city.  The police says that in future, the number of challans issued will increase from the current 400-500 daily to 30,000 as the number of speed guns will increase.

Meanwhile, there is a need to increase the number of speed limit signs on the roads and also place them at clearly visible points.
