Kolkata: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit the Andaman Island region on Friday.

The depth of the earthquake was measured at 10 km, the Indian Metereological Department said in a statement.

Reports of damage to property or life have not been received so far, it said.

Speaking to ANI, JL Gautam, Director of Seismology Department said, "It has nothing got to do with Nepal Earthquake, it occurred in active seismic zone."

Gautam further said, "Earthquake of moderate intensity measuring 5.4 on Richter scale was felt in Andaman Islands region at 2.29 pm."

The earthquake comes within a week of the high-intensity quake that hit Nepal and adjoining areas including parts of India last Saturday.

Nepal is struggling with relief operations after the country was devastated last weekend by the earthquake of 7.9 magnitude, killing 6,200.
