Chennai: The Tsunami Warning Centre of Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to Indian Ocean in the aftermath of an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hitting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday afternoon.
Initially, there was concern when INCOIS website posted tsunami warning in Indian Ocean, but the experts have brushed aside any such threat. A scientist at tsunami warning centre told the Deccan Chronicle that the tsunami waves would be formed only if the earthquake measures more than 5.2 in the Richter scale. So, there is no threat to Indian Ocean. “No significant changes in the sea were observed”.
When contacted, the officials of the Metrological Department in Chennai also said there is no threat to Chennai coast and expressed ignorance about any such warning. This quake comes within days after massive devastation in Nepal where over 6,200 people were reported dead following a earthquake of 7.9 magnitude.
