Let’s be honest. No matter how much we all try to pretend to love hitting the gym, most of us find exercising a complete and utter chore. Add to that a conscious yet sheepish early morning pep talk with self on not hitting the snooze button to catch those five minutes of extra sleep. However, if you are on Facebook, Pinterest or Instagram, you must have certainly scrolled down on the latest buzzword that’s been crazily circling around on all of these media — ‘fitspiration’ or ‘fitspo’. Fitness+ inspiration or fitspo are posts wherein devotees post pictures from their flexible yoga sessions to energetic running or powerful weightlifting.
The mantra ‘strong is the new skinny’ has been gaining currency online among fitspo devotees and Anubha Raman of Anubha’s Wholistic Yoga — Yogalates explains, “I am a regular fitspo aficionado and share pictures and articles as I feel people like to believe what they see since everyone is seeking results. Also, who says that if you’re skinny you’re fit? It is a myth. When we talk of fitness, we talk of strength, stamina, flexibility, agility and endurance. Fitness levels vary from person to person depending on age, gender, medical history, genes and lifestyle etc.”
Graphic designer Karan Oberoi has found inspiration in the fitspo posts of celebrities. “I sit at my workstation for at least six hours a day for six days a week. I recently came across this fitness trend that provides a gentle, visual nudge to eat more veggies and hit the gym on dreadful Mondays. Out of curiosity, I started researching and found out that so many Bollywood and Hollywood celebs post and update enviable pictures of themselves during or post-workouts. Inspired by them, I have started following the trend myself and it has been tremendously motivating to see more pictures of ordinary people also being taken by fitspiration.”
