Chennai: A group of boys went on the rampage, damaging two cars and bikes at a residential area in Velachery on Monday night besides injuring two women who attempted to stop them. The incident happened after residents of Neduncheliyan street in Nehru Nagar reprimanded two of them earlier in the day for racing and speeding on the streets. According to a resident, G. Thilakavathi (31), two boys on their bikes were speeding through the streets around 6.30 pm on Monday after which a few locals got together and pulled them up. “The boys were chided for their rash driving as children were playing on the street. They left the street warning of dire consequences,” Thilakavathi said.

Three hours later, the duo – Selvakumar (19) and Guru (22) - returned with five of their friends, all armed with cricket bats and sticks. The group started hitting the windshields of two cars parked on the street. A. Selvi (46), who rushed out of her home hearing the noise, attempted to stop the gang.“The boys were attacking my son-in-law’s car and when I tried to stop them, they pushed me down. I suffered injuries on my left hand,” Selvi said. The gang also attacked a 17-year-old girl, Sudha, a class 11 student, who attempted to raise an alarm, Selvi added.

Both women were moved to nearby clinics where they were treated for minor injuries and discharged, the police said. As locals converged on the street on hearing the commotion, the boys fled. The Guindy police rushed to the spot on information and after interrogation,  picked up the two boys, Selvakumar (19) alias Chella and his friend Guru (22). The boys are residents of Kamarajar street, Mathiyazhagan Nagar, also in Velachery. Through them, the cops also arrested Manikandan (19), a second-year B.E. student, Balaji (19), another Manikandan (19), and Vijayakumar (20), while they have launched a hunt for another youth, Parthasarathy.
