NEW DELHICongress leader and industrialist Naveen Jindal, former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, former minister of state for coal Dasari Narayan Rao, former coal secretary H.C. Gupta, and 11 others, including five private firms, were on Wednesday summoned as accused by a special CBI court in connection with the coal scam.

The case regarding which they have been summoned pertains to the allocation of Amarkonda Murgadangal coal block. Reiterating their earlier stand, the JSPL in a statement said that it is confident of standing vindicated at the end of the judicial process.
The court, after summoning them as accused, fixed May 22 as the next date of hearing.
The court had on April 30 rapped the probe agency for not impounding the passport of Mr Jindal.

On April 29, the CBI had chargesheeted them for the offence punishable under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating) and 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) of the IPC and under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The accused, through their counsels, have denied the allegations, claiming there had been no irregularity in the coal allocation to Jindal Steel.  In 2012, massive irregularities in allocation of coal blocks had come to light after the national auditor had put the loss to the exchequer at  Rs 1.86 lakh crore.
