Mary Kom's director Omung Kumar to direct Sarabjit Singh biopic
The film will go on floors in October and will release next year
Mumbai: National award-winning filmmaker Omung Kumar will direct a biopic based on Sarabjit Singh, the Indian prisoner who died in Pakistan. Omung's directorial debut 'Mary Kom' won the trophy for Best Popular Film at the recently concluded 62nd National Film Awards.
"Yes, I will be directing and co-producing Sarabjit film. Even though I have three scripts lined up, this will be my next film after 'Mary Kom'," Omung said in a statement here.
Kumar will produce the film writer-actor Zeishan Quadri of 'Gangs of Wasseypur' fame. "Omung is the perfect choice because 'Mary Kom' was both a critically acclaimed film and a commercial success," Quadri said.
In the film, Sarabjit's story will be told through the eyes of his sister, Dalbir Kaur. It was reported that actress Kangana Ranaut is in talks for the role of Dalbir, however, the filmmakers said they are yet to finalise an actress. "The film will go on floors in the first week of October with a start-to-finish 60-day schedule. It will be shot in and around Punjab," Zeishan said, adding they plan to release it next year.
