Meerkat was delivered a major blow by Twitter when the live streaming service was cut off from Twitter’s network as it rivaled Twitter-owned Periscope. Meerkat have now opened up their platform to allow anyone to create apps.
“We want to create a community for third party developers to interact and work together with the Meerkat development team,” the company wrote. “There is a lot more to be done with video live streaming and we are here to support you. We all get better by working together.”
Meerkat revealed 37 developers had already created applications linked to the streaming service. Meerkat stats for example provided in depth analytics about the audience and their streaming history. Meerkat though has set guidelines that doesn’t enable anonymous watching.
With Twitter yet to release Periscope’s API, Meerkat is keen to expand by creating an independent eco-system. With Twitter having asked Meerkat to not use its social media network, the firm is now allowing users to stream through Facebook.
