At a recent promotional event for the upcoming film Nanbargal Narpani Mandram (NNM), which marks the return of veteran filmmaker Radha Bharathi, PT Selvakumar, the publicist-turned-producer of Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Puli was heard showering laurels on SJ. Suryah. Interestingly, Selvakumar is releasing NNM. He said, “Despite giving several hits as a director and succeeding as an actor, Suryah is a humble person. We don’t get to see him often in filmy functions. When I invited him for this event, he was very glad to grace the occasion.”
Talking about how he arrived at the title Puli, he said, “My team listed 10 different titles for this movie directed by Chimbudevan. After going through the list, Vijay sir said that he was keen on the title Puli, which is great because it is apt for the fantasy entertainer. However, I knew that the title Puli was with SJ Suryah as he had registered it long back, and had been renewing it with the Tamil Film Producers’ Council. I thought we should not give up without trying to ask him. So when I called Suryah and told him that Vijay sir was eager to name his upcoming flick Puli, he did not hesitate in helping us. He gave us the go-ahead instantly.”
He added that at a time when people expect to be paid well for parting with the rights to a film title, Suryah refused to accept anything. According to him, this was only possible because the two share a good rapport. While Senguttuvan plays the male lead in NNM, Akshaya, a model from Bengaluru, has been roped in to play the female lead. The film is about friendship and love.
