Chennai: Idol wing personnel of the economic offence wing seized a 200-year-old Vinayaka idol and 900 gm of narcotics from a readymade clothes shop in a mall at T. Nagar here on Tuesday.  This is the second seizure by the idol wing police in the last one week, but this is the first time they are making a seizure of narcotics. The police team arrested nine people including the shop-owner, identified as Rajasekhar, 43, a resident of Mylapore, in connection with the seizure.

Along with Rajasekhar, the police arrested Thanikachalam, Justin, Shanmugham, Srinivasan and Swayamboolingam in connection with the seizure of a panchaloha Vinayaka idol weighing around 11 kg. EOW officials said the seized narcotics are suspected to be amphetamine powder valued at around Rs10 lakh in the market. Three persons, identified as Thyagarajan, Sheik Ahmed and Sadiq Ahmed, along with shop-owner Rajasekhar, were booked for possession of contraband. The four suspects will be handed over to NIB for further legal action.

“This is the first time EOW sleuths are seizing narcotics. The delivery men happened to be in the shop when our team went to the shop to seize the idol. So, they were also detained,” noted Prateep V. Philip, additional director general of police.
