Visakhapatnam: The study being conducted by scientists of National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), to suggest measures to tackle Vizag’s beach erosion is progressing on the right track and a detailed report will be submitted to the state government by June end. NIOT scientists are now busy calculating the field information they have collected over a period of last five months and are now busy preparing the detailed report which would be submitted soon.
The state government in February appointed a high level special committee with NIOT as a nodal agency with Vizag port chairman M.T. Krishna Babu as the chairman to study the erosion issue and suggest both short and long term measures. NIOT scientists made several field visits and collected secondary data of tides, waves and their parameters and beach sediments movement along the shore over the last few months.
It is the first ever scientific study taken up by the state government involving various agencies after the Beach Road in the city faced erosion continuously for two years in 2013 and 2014. Parts of the Beach Road in the city caved in due to the sea surge which got visitors and residents living in the apartments spread over the entire Beach Road stretch got panicked.
“We have already collected field information from various locations and we are now calculating all that to prepare a final report.” “Our study is progressing as per the initial plan and we will submit a final report on the measures to be taken to tackle the beach erosion. Model simulation studies which is mathematical calculations to understand the wave transformation and sediments movement along the shore is underway.”
“We will suggest a solution for the beach erosion problem,” a senior scientist of NIOT, Chennai, told DC. The report submitted by NIOT will be cross checked by CPWRS of Pune and Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, which has expertise in dealing with beach erosion, VPT chairman M.T. Krishna Babu said earlier.
A deep-sea survey, wave-pattern study, hydraulic and coastal studies, wave modelling and hydro-dynamic modelling are also part of the NIOT study.
