1,789 schools get notices in surprise health inspection

As many as 1,789 schools and 52 student hostels were slapped with improvement notices

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With only a couple of weeks remaining for the reopening of schools, the directorate of health services (DHS) on Wednesday carried out statewide inspections of schools as part of the ‘Safe Kerala’ initiative.

As many as 1,789 schools and 52 student hostels were slapped with improvement notices as part of the drive which aims at ensuring a hygienic environment at schools.   

The squads, which was led by district medical officers,  inspected a total of 7,694 schools and 285 student hostels as part of the drive.

Director of health services N. Sridhar said that the squads under the health department carried out inspections of around 10,680 schools in the previous year.

In a release issued here, he said that many of the schools were yet to step up hygienic conditions to ensure safe health for students.  

Mr Sridhar said that follow up inspections would be held to find out the steps that had been taken by school authorities to rectify the flaws pointed out by the health squad. He said that strict action would be taken against the school authorities if they failed to improve the conditions.

Some of the violations include poor toilet facility, unhygienic storage of food , dirty kitchen and drinking water.
