Visakhapatnam: The state government would be spending around Rs 500 crore to set up energy plants in all 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh to generate power from waste. Talking to reporters after reviewing GVMC and Vuda activities with the officials concerned on Wednesday, municipal administration minister, P. Narayana, said the state government has set an initial target to generate power from 50,000 tonnes of waste.
“We will identify suitable sites to set up these plants in each district and hand them over to private parties by calling for tenders. Private power producers are charging Rs 6.50 to Rs 8 per unit of power generated from waste. Waste from the 50 km radius around the energy plant will be collected to generate power.” “The government had decided to spend around Rs 500 crore and we have already sanctioned the amount,” said Mr Narayana.
Talking about the sewage treatment for future water needs, Mr Narayana said that of the 200 MLD water supplied by GVMC in the city, 150 MLD of sewage water comes out but the city has facilities to treat only 20 MLD. He added that city needs 250 MLD water in a day. “We have asked the GVMC officials to prepare proposals to set up sewage treatment plants one at Anakapalli and another at Bheemili.”
“We have set a target of setting up these two new sewage treatment plants within a year and also to supply drinking water to every household without any shortage by 2016,” he said.
The minister also said that special attention and focus is being given towards schools run by municipalities which are around 1,852 across the state, ensuring those studying at these schools get quality education and get admissions into country’s premier institutes.
“We have set a target to ensure that majority rank holders in 2018 All India level competitive exams are from the students of AP’s municipal schools. We will provide quality education at municipal schools by also roping in private teachers,” he added.
