Slushy season ahead for Kozhikode residents
Completion of work on Mavoor Road unlikely by monsoon
KOZHIKODE: The city residents will have to wade through slush and the motorists will have to risk their life while travelling on Mavoor Road during the monsoon.
The Kozhikode corporation authorities have said that the drainage works on the arterial road will not be completed before the onset of monsoon.
The work has been stalled following the protests raised by the residents of Thiruthiad and led by the ward councillor against digging up the roads.
The traffic on Mavoor Road has been badly hit due to the slow pace of the work over the last two months. One side of the road has been dug up to construct a drainage connecting Mavoor Road to Canoly canal to avoid water-logging at Mavoor Road — Rajaji Road junction. However, as usual, the work for the same started late and is continuing to drag on.
The Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP), in charge of the work, had set a deadline of May 15 for its completion.
The drainage was supposed to cut through the Azhakodi Devi temple road to Canoly canal. However, the residents have objected to this saying that their areas will be affected due to the drainage. Sources told DC that they feared that the works would not be completed before the onset of monsoon.
“We are trying to pacify the people. We need to study whether there was any technical fault in the plan proposed by the KSUDP.
“However, we have told the KSUDP to continue the work,” M. Mohanan, chairman of the corporation public works standing committee, told Deccan Chronicle.
