Karnataka SSLC results: Our students, not just bookworms!
Majority of the students secured A grade in life skills while only a handful of students have secured C grade
Bengaluru: The SSLC part B results which are related to life skills and value education which were announced along with the SSLC results on Tuesday, has an element of surprise! Contrary to wide speculation that city students are becoming book worms and that values are degrading, the majority of the students were able to secure A grade in most of the life skills.
As part of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) introduced for the first time in the SSLC, all the class X students were evaluated on life skills which included physical and health education, attitudes and values, work experience and art education. These evaluations were done at school level and now the results are announced along with the SSLC results as part B.
According to the results, in all the parameters, the majority of the students secured A grade while only a handful of students have secured C grade. The same trend is reflected even in the city schools.
Speaking to this newspaper, an officer from the state primary and secondary education department informed that for the first time, these Part B grades are included in the SSLC results.
“Nowadays there is an immense demand for physical and health education, value education and art education in the school level. These are part of CCE. As marks are allotted at the school level, we can easily track the performance of the students in the extra-curricular activities through this,’ he said. “There are a lot of complaints that today’s students are studying just for scoring marks. But these results have proved that students are giving importance even to extra-curricular activities,” he added.
Visually impaired students from Samarthanam excel
These are heart rending stories of grit and determination under adversity. Two students, who are visually impaired and have been studying in the school run by the NGO Samarthanam Trust in the city, have come out with flying colours in the SSLC exams.
Ramya, the daughter of a garment factory worker in Shivamogga, was delighted to know that she had scored 512 out of 625. Though the results were announced on Tuesday, she did not know her scores till Wednesday afternoon, when Deccan Chronicle told her.
“I studied for 5-6 hours every day, as I was determined to get good scores. I have the ambition of becoming a software engineer," she said. Her classmate Mahesh Somalinga, who is also visually impaired, has got 460 for 625. “I studied day and night and I kept replaying the cassettes, which were the only study material for me. The cassettes are recorded when the teachers teach us in class," he said.
“My father is a daily wage labourer and I am looking for scholarships for my higher studies. Teachers and parents have helped me succeed," he said. Mamatha H.G., who is also a visually impaired student, has secured 427, while her classmate, Manish R., who has a specific learning disability, has scored 313.
