According to police there were nine people in the vehicle, including the driver, and they were returning from Chittoor. The accident happened around 11.45 am in front of Volvo company premises in Yalachalahalli on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad national highway. They were all related and had gone to Chittoor to bring back a newly-wed bride in their family from her parent’s house.

Five occupants, including the driver, who were seated on the right side of the vehicle escaped without any injuries, while the four people seated on the left suffered the maximum impact of collision and died. The bodies had to be extricated out of the mangled remains of the vehicle, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Praveen Kumar, 31, a software engineer from Norway; his mother Saraswathi, 60; Mohitha, 12; and Deekshita, 5, two daughters of another relative. While Praveen died on the spot, Saraswathi, Mohitha and Deekshita died on the way to hospital, police added. The bodies were shifted to Hoskote government hospital for post-mortem and later handed over to family members.

The vehicle had left Chitoor, along with bride Soundharya, around 7.30 am. They were going to Jinke Thimmanehalli in K.R. Puram, where Soundharya’s husband Subash’s family was residing.

When they reached Yalachalahalli, the Tata Sumo was moving at a high speed driver reportedly mistook the parked lorry to be moving one and when he realised his mistake he veered the vehicle to the right, but it was too late. The vehicle hit the rear part of the lorry and the left side got mangled. The parked truck was also seized as it is against rule to park them near national highways, police said.
