AOC night traffic curbs continue, residents suffer

Commuters have to travel two km more to reach their destination due to the restrictions

Hyderabad: It doesn’t appear that Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has discussed the AOC night restriction issue with Union defence minister Manohar Parrikar during their recent meeting.

The last meet between the defence and GHMC authorities was in December and neither party has come forward for constructing alternative roads. There is thus no relief for the 13 lakh people using the roads.

P. Rama Kanth, a resident of Neredmet crossroads, said, “The AOC centre was far from the city a few decades ago, with very little habitation beyond Marredpally. Today, the area has become the city’s heart and such restrictions will not augur well for any city. The Army should be more considerate and learn to co-exist peacefully. Security can be strengthened with the cooperation of regular commuters and not by alienating them. We would like to see a people-friendly Army in the twin cities.”

Commuters have to travel two km more to reach their destination due to the restrictions. All the routes — Trimulgherry, Tukaram Gate, Alwal and R.K Puram — are crippled after 10 pm. Those wanting to board a train at Safilguda railway station have to travel through Moula Ali or Sainikpuri or Tukaram Gate-Hanumannagar to Safilguda.

“We, the residents of Malkajgiri, have tried everything to get the restrictions lifted, but despite taking the issue to the High Court, the defence minister, the TS CM and Malkajgiri MP Ch. Mallareddy and MLA Kanaka Reddy, the restrictions are still in place and there’s no sight of relief,” added B.T. Srinivas, president of Malkajgiri RWA.
