Chennai MLA resigns to make way for Jayalalithaa
P. Vetrivel resigned from the assembly ahead of the AIADMK legislature party meeting
Chennai: AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa is likely to contest from the Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency in the city after party MLA, P. Vetrivel resigned from the Assembly on Sunday. It is significant that he did so just ahead of the AIADMK legislature party meeting scheduled for May 22. An Assembly release said Vetrivel had resigned with immediate effect and that Speaker P. Dhanapal had accepted the resignation. The seat was subsequently declared vacant by assembly secretary AMP Jamaludeen.
Dhanapal stated that Vetrivel’s resignation had been accepted with effect from May 17 as per provisions of Rule 22 of Tamil Nadu Assembly Rules as it is in accordance with Rule 21 of TN Assembly Rules.
He announced the seat as vacant as per Article 190 (3) (b) of the Constitution. In the 2011 general elections, Vetrivel polled 83,777 votes defeating DMK rival P.K. Sekar Babu who obtained 52,522 votes. Sekar Babu had earlier snapped his ties with AIADMK and joined DMK.
