Kottayam: The waste disposal plant established by the  municipality  at Nagampadom at a cost of Rs 30 lakhs is lying neglected even five months after its inauguration in December. This is because the plant has so far not got power and water connections.

Another waste treatment plant, which  was  established at Kodimatha by spending an  equal amount, is also non-functional.

The two  plants were constructed by the previous municipal council and can process at least four tonnes of waste a day. The waste crisis in the  town had intensified after the Vadavathoor dumping yard was closed and the accumulated waste caused worries to the public.

“The municipality should immediately apply for  power connections for  these plants. Otherwise, they will remain idle and will become useless,”   said a  councillor of the ruling front. Municipal chairman K.R.G. Varrier told Deccan Chronicle that the municipality would look into the issue and solve it  soon.
