THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to appoint T P Senkumar as the new state police chief.  The present state police chief K S Balasubramanian is retiring from service this month.

A 1983-batch IPS officer, Senkumar is known for his no nonsense character, high-level of integrity and a clean track record. Hence the government opted for him, despite efforts made by his senior Mahesh Kumar Singla, who is now on central deputation at the Border Security Force, to get the top-cop postition. Senkumar is now serving as DGP (Prisons).

Senkumar had served in the Indian Economic Service before joining the IPS. He has held many key posts including that of ADGP (Intelligence), IG South-zone, Kochi city police commissioner, Transport Commissioner, KSRTC managing director and Kerala State Beverages Corporation managing director.

On the spot suspension of a police constable who had beaten up students violating the senior officers’ directions during a clash at MG College premises was one of the bold measures of Senkumar.

He also courted controversies with his public statements against the film ‘Drishyam’ and criticising the forest officials’ actions against actor Kalabhavan Mani. Senkumar had exposed the goat, Manjiyam tree plantation scams and the LIS financial cheating.
