New Delhi: BJP leader Subramanian Swami has moved the Supreme Court challenging certain provisions in the IPC relating to hate speech and seeking a declaration that they are unconstitutional as they violated freedom of speech and expression.
In his petition Dr Swami said he was personally concerned that increasingly in the past few years, the impugned Sections had been invoked against him by various authorities politically inimical to him to penalise him for his clearheaded extensive research and his ideological beliefs and thereby make him conform to the norms of certain special ideological and religious groups.
He referred to at least five such recent FIRs/summons reported to be issued against him, from Delhi, Mumbai, Karimganj in Assam, Mohali in Punjab and Thrissur in Kerala, for presumed “hate speech”.
