HyderabadDelhi Metro’s mistake, as far as poor main roads and connectivity to metro stations are concerned, will not be repeated in Hyderabad. Every elevated Metro station in the city will have a designated service lane so that buses, autorickshaws and private vehicles, instead of stopping on the main road for Metro passengers, will use the adjoining service lane so that the traffic is uninterrupted.

Service lane works are currently on at Nagole and Uppal stations. The Hyderabad Metro Rail will be the first project in India to have service lanes as part of the “transforming station surroundings and street” concept.

HMR MD N.V.S. Reddy said, “For a service lane, a minimum of 20 ft X 150 ft are required. HMR is identifying government properties where there is possibility of road widening to construct service lanes. Wider roads, where the service lanes are not maintained currently, too will get service lanes. Widening is required for most of the roads, but at already built-up areas (the core city), the station-road connectivity will be worked on.”

“At the Nagole and Uppal Metro stations, road re-engineering works, which are currently on, include service lanes, beautification of central medians and sidewalks, street furniture, seating arrangements and art works (statues ).”
