Exam oriented training helps tutorial students

Chennai: Besides just schools, tutorial centres in the city too celebrated the phenomenal state board exam results, on Thursday. Most students trained by tutorials attribute their success to the exam-oriented training they received from tutorials, compared to the classroom mode of training. Students felt the question banks they had referred to during their intense training had helped them secure high scores.

“I had spent most of my time at a tutorial center here in T. Nagar rather than spending time in classes and moreover, some of the questions that we had discussed had almost repeated in the exams,” said S. Manikantan, a student of a corporation school in Mylapore, who secured 90 per cent marks.Also, most of these tutorials had 80 to 95 per cent pass percentages with majority of students scoring over 420 marks out of the 500.

At a private coaching institute in Adyar, that has been running for the past 20 years, barring 10 students, the rest scored over 400 marks.“We make sure the best faculty is in place to make sure each batch is taught to face any questions in the board exams,” said S. Mohan, faculty of the tutorial centre.Most of these training centers have a 12-hour batch system that starts from six in the morning to nine in the night - with 10 to 12 teachers teaching mathematics, science, social studies, English and Tamil.

And With over 100 students training at most of these coaching institutes, students and parents are increasingly relying on coaching centres for that exam-oriented approach. However, the future of such a model of education and its effects have turned into a matter of debate and long-term effects on the education system are to be observed.
