BENGALURU: Unable to bear with constant harassment, a housewife bludgeoned her alcoholic husband to death, set his body on fire and fled with her three children in Rajagopal Nagar police station limits early Friday.
Police said the incident happened between 2 am and 5 am at a house close to Sai Temple in Chowdeshwari Nagar, near Ring Road Laggre Bridge.
The victim, identified as Vijayakumar, 45, was a mason by profession. He was reportedly an alcoholic and used to come home drunk every night and quarrel with his wife, Maheswari, 35. According to the police, on Thursday night, an inebriated Vijayakumar came home and started quarrelling with his wife. The quarrel escalated to such an extent that the neighbours had to intervene and ask Vijayakumar to calm down and leave.
Later in the night Vijayakumar returned and started quarrelling with his wife. An enraged Maheswari reportedly bludgeoned her husband using a boulder and later set his body on fire. She along with her three children, the eldest one a daughter, is absconding, said the police. The family is Telugu-speaking and hail from Mantralaya village in Andhra Pradesh, added the police.
The incident came to light on Friday early morning when one of the neighbours saw the door left open and when he went inside he found Vijayakumar lying in a pool of blood. He informed other neighbours, who in turn alerted the police. The police shifted the body to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem.
Rajagopal Nagar police have registered a case of murder and launched a search for his wife. “We suspect that she might have escaped to her native in Andhra Pradesh and efforts are being made to nab her soon,” a police officer said.
