1 killed, another injured as lorry rams bike on old National Highway

ALAPPUZHA: A college student was killed and his friend injured when  the motorcycle they were riding collided with a mini lorry at  Krishnapuram near Kayamkulam  on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Arun S. Pillai, 19, son of Sudharaman,  Ananthu Bhavan, Puthuckadu, Chavara, Kollam district.  His friend Monu, who was riding pillion, has been admitted to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital where his condition was stable, police said.

The accident occurred on National Highway 66 (Old NH47)  around 8 am when the duo,  final-year B.Com students of  College of English in Karunagapally, were going to attend the university exam  at TKMM Arts and Science College, Nangiarkulanagra  here. 

The lorry carrying mineral water, which was heading towards Thiruvananthapuram, hit the bike  going in the  opposite direction. Though the police took them to the nearby hospital,  Arun succumbed to the head injury.

The police  took into custody lorry driver Rajesh 34, of Alakode, Kannur, and the vehicle. Arun’s body was handed over to the relatives after post-mortem,  said the police.
