Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation needs to increase its sanitation staff strength. Currently, there are close to 27,000 sanitation employees and they are not able to meet the city’s demand. Many recently-developed colonies do not have sweepers, garbage bins or waste collection teams. Colonies of the adjoining municipalities have been ignored since they were attached to the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad.
S. Dinesh, resident of Vinayakanagar Colony, Shaikpet, said, “In the past six months, there has been no sweeping of roads in our colony and even the dumpyard near the main bus stop has not been cleared. The mosquito menace too has increased.”
The GHMC has not allotted the sanitation personnel according to the area of the ward. For instance, Kapra has been allotted 136 employees, while Yapral only 50 and Aliyabad 36. Champapet has 257 sanitation staff and Chandanagar has 180. The system is not organised.
