WARANGAL: Twenty-year-old Narasimha from Bhongir was abandoned by his relatives because he was born with HIV. He contracted AIDS from his mother who died after he was born. His father too died in a road accident, a few years ago. He was denied treatment in many government hospitals. His relatives gave up hope and disowned him but now, Narasimha is studying in a private college in Jangaon.
He was taken in by Karunalayam Care and Support Centre at Karunapuram, located on the Warangal-Hyderabad highway. He is being provided free food, accommodation and medication. There are many like Narasimha, affected by AIDS and denied entry into hospitals due to social stigma and in need of care and support.
The centre is devoted to caring for people with HIV and AIDS. There are over a hundred boys and girls who are provided care and support by Karunalayam. At present, 18 male and 10 female patients are undergoing treatment here. However, the necessary support needed for such centres to function smoothly is not being provided by the state and central governments.
Established in 2002, the centre treated over 5,000 people in the last one decade. The State AIDS Control Society and NACO funded the centre till 2013. After bifurcation of the state, the centre lost the financial aid from the state government.
