Karimnagar: Karimnagar district is registering scorching heatwave conditions from the past one month. But the district health authorities failed to create awareness among public over steps to beat the heat. As a result, the district is witnessing several deaths due to sunstroke. Rural folks in particular have no clue about tackling heatwave conditions.
Usually, health authorities organise programmes to enhance awareness over sunstroke, diarrhoea and cholera that affect many in summer, by organising rallies in the month of March every year. They use either children from government schools or employees of medical and health department to put forward the message.
“But no awareness programme was conducted so far as we never thought that our district would register the scorching heatwave conditions,” admits a senior official. “Even if we try planning an awareness programme, it is hard to take assistance from students because schools have closed for summer holidays. And, you cannot assign employees to undertake a campaign, considering the blistering heatwave conditions” he added.
When questioned, District Health and Medical Officer Dr Mohd Aleem said that Mandal Parishad Development Officers (MPDO) were supplying oral rehydration salt (ORS) packets to labourers who are engaged in work sanctioned under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He advised public not to go out unless absolutely necessary. Mr Aleem advised people to wear light cotton clothes, drink water frequently and stay indoors during day time.
