NSS builds a roof for destitute woman
Mary of Kuriachira was living in the house covered with palm leaves
Kochi: The National Service Scheme volunteers of Government Vocational Higher Secondary School (GVHSS) for Girls, Thrissur, have come to the aid of a poor widow who is living under a leaking roof and a crumbling house all alone.
Mary of Kuriachira was living in the house covered with palm leaves. She has poor eyesight and is not in any position to do work. The NSS camp of GVHSS for Girls was conducted in the slum area of Kuriachira . The NSS volunteers, before closing their camp, raised funds from the people of the area by distributing coupons of Rs 10/- and thus paved the way for building a permanent roof for the house.
“A lot of middle and upper middle class people who inhabit Kuriachira area helped to raise the fund of Rs 50,000 for the purpose. We adopted 55 of 150 houses in the slum in January this year and have been conducting a series of activities in the area. The canal in the area has been cleaned, an awareness campaign has been conducted and a medical camp also has been held in the area after a survey was conducted to identify its needs. We plan to associate with the Health Department for the healthcare of the inmates of the slum,” said the programme co-ordinator and NSS programme officer Dhanya Joseph. The initiative is supported by the Slum Service Centre, Kuriachira and the division councillor Bilcy Babu.
