KochiTrained as police sniffer dogs, Chakki & Christy served the  police force but the department neglected  them as they grew old.  But dog lovers have now managed to save the two German Shepherds  and  taken them to the  Voice of Stray Dogs in Bangalore.

The  plight of the dogs was in the news recently and Sally Kannan, a Thrissur-based animal rights activist, intervened in the issue. The dogs’ health was deteriorating  and one of them had lost its tail.

Sally and her friends sent request letters to the Home Ministry and the police headquarters and followed it up with phone calls and mails. After  three months, the dogs were finally released to her.

Sally, who runs a shelter house for the dogs in Thrissur,  decided to shift them to Bangalore owing to canine distemper,  a viral disease. “I am going through a  tough time with  distemper for many  dogs,  and keeping the police dogs here for longer was a risk to them.  So we made the trip to Bangalore and handed them over  to the Voice of Stray Dogs,” Sally said.

The activists criticised the  police department which neglects  most of its old dogs.  “A period of neglect has left them unhealthy, but we  hope  they will bounce back soon,”  a statement released by the Voice of Stray Dogs on Facebook said.
