Tension at temple festival
Two fishermen groups have been feuding for quite a long time
Nagapattinam: Tension prevailed for a while and vehicular traffic severely affected near the Government hospital here on Saturday, as a section of fishermen of Samanthaan pettai fishermen hamlet protested against the assault of some youth by another fishermen’s group of Nambiyar nagar due to previous enmity.
Police said that there has been a running feud between the two groups over a local temple festival for quite long time. When a group of youths of Samanthaan pettai came to participate in the car festival of Sri Neelathatchi Amman temple here, it was objected to by a group of fishermen of Nambiyar nagar, resulting in the latter beating up some youths of the former group.
Enraged fishermen at once resorted to a road-roko at Palpannaicheery near Collectorate at Nagapattinam and subsequently in front of the Government headquarters hospital, where four injured youths of Samanthaan pettai were admitted. The Nambiyar Nagar fishermen’s group allegedly inflicted the injuries. Police rushed to the spot, pacified the agitators and restored normalcy.
Further investigations on the two groups complaints are on.
