Industry power cuts to be lifted June 5 in Tamil Nadu
State buoyed by improved power scenario
Chennai: All power restrictions are being eased in the state. The control measures imposed on high-tension industrial units and commercial establishment consumers are to be relaxed from June 5, following an order of the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
An official release said the CM ordered complete withdrawal of 20 per cent power restriction imposed on the HT consumers during non peak hours from June 5 while the 90 per cent power cut during peak hour will be temporarily relaxed till September 30. Under the 90 per cent peak hour restriction, the high tension consumers had been permitted to use only 10 per cent of the demand and energy quota between 6 pm and 10 pm.
Load shedding for domestic and other Low Tension power consumers was ended effective June 1 last year. “The power situation has improved due to the various projects of CM Jayalalithaa. In the last four years, 4991.5 mega watts of generation capacity has been added to the grid,” the release said.
The announcement on lifting of power cuts on industries came in the wake of improved power supply position in the state and commencement of the wind season. Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) and Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers Association (TECA) welcomed the relaxation of the restriction measures.
“The industry, as a whole, is grateful to the Chief Minister for putting an end to the power shortage and giving much needed relief to industrial entrepreneurs in the state, particularly the textile industry to sustain the competitiveness,” SIMA chairman T Rajkumar said in a statement.
SIMA also thanked Jayalalaithaa for taking several steps to evacuate the wind power to the maximum extent possible during the earlier seasons and sustain the viability of textile mills in Tamil Nadu.
TECA president D. Balasundaram welcomed the removal of the restriction and control measures on power supply by the state government and Tangedco and thanked the CM for it. He expressed the hope that the year 2015-16 would pass off without any re-imposition of power restrictions in view of the additional capacities that are coming into operation.
