Coimbatore: With no streetlights on the flyover at Eachanari in suburban Coimbatore, the stretch of the Pollachi-Coimbatore national highway plunges into complete darkness in the evenings. The Aam Admi party has complained about this to the district collector.

The district secretary of Aam Admi Party, Mohammed Rafi, in a petition to the collector highlighted the plight of the road users who use the flyover during nights on the Pollachi - Coimbatore national highway. The flyover at Eachanari was constructed at a cost of Rs 13 crore on NH209 to replace the railway gate at the spot. It was completed six months ahead of schedule and was inaugurated by the Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa in 2013.

This flyover was meant to decongest traffic in the area and reduce journey time for passengers, especially students coming from Palani, Udumalpet, Pollachi, Valparai and Kinathukadavu. However, even two years after the construction of the flyover, the state government has not bothered to provide streetlights on the flyover. This is perilous to the road users as it has resulted in several accidents.

The AAP has urged the collector to intervene and ensure that streetlights are installed. The absence of streetlights even two years after the completion of the flyover only indicates the lack of responsibility of the state government towards the public, the AAP said.
