Only 1084 transformers can be shifted, says Bescom
It also stated for shifting transformers, it requires assistance from KERC and BBMP
BENGALURU: In an affidavit before the high court on Tuesday, Bescom has stated that out of the 8,811 transformers located on various footpaths in Bengaluru, only 1,084 could be shifted to nearby locations. It added that out of those 1084 transformers, at least 550 require suitable places for shifting, and 32 transformers can be shifted under the Namma Metro and flyovers. It also stated for shifting transformers, it requires assistance from KERC and BBMP.
It also assured to the court that henceforth it will take into account the safety aspects while installing transformers. The court was hearing PIL relating to encroachment of footpath and drains. The court has adjourned the matter. Earlier the BESCOM had stated that it has requested National Institute of Design to study redesigning of transformers in view of paucity of space and safety to public.
Lake encroachment
The high court on tuesday directed the authorities not to precipitate the matter, and consider the objections by the alleged encroachers before passing a final order. The court observed, “There cannot be any discrimination on the ground that some have purchased land from BDA and some have privately purchased. It is for the government to take a call on the issue.”
Local resident Balachandran and others had approached the court challenging the notice issued by the tahsildar in Dec 2014 directing the encroachers to evict or face action. The court while passing the orders has held that the notice cannot be treated as order, and asked the officials to consider their objections before passing final orders.
