KuthalamTension prevailed for a while at the government hospital premises at Kuthalam in Nagapattinam district on Wednesday, as a section of local residents and group of patients complained to the district collector S. Palanisamy, who paid a surprise visit to the hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the collector went round the hospital, verified the drugs stock register, and enquired about the quality of treatment with a few inpatients, as well as medical and paramedical staff during his visit.
Members of the public told the collector that there was only one doctor
available in the hospital and that too in the morning hours only, as against the sanctioned strength of five.

For any emergency, they had go to Mayiladuthurai that involved more strain and risk, they added. The collector assured the people that he would look in to the matter.
Later, Mr Palanisamy also visited the Town panchyat office at Kuthalam.
