Revived Sitarampalya Lake set for inauguration today

BENGALURU: An NGO, Tropical Research Development Centre, and Brigade Group have given a fresh lease of life to Sitarampalya Lake, which spreads across 23.37 acres of land at Whitefield.

The barren like land with mounds of garbage and debris has been brought back to its original glory in one year. The work began in May 2014 and is ready for inauguration on Thursday with a capacity to hold nearly 14,000 litres of water.

Before the work began, a detailed project report was submitted to the BDA, and the expert committee cleared it. “The restoration work was taken up as part of the corporate social responsibility initiative,” said Abil Abbi, Director, Tropical Research and Development.

Felling of trees around the lake had resulted in receding water tables and flight of birds. Rs 1.5 crore was spent to bring the life back to the lake, he said. Sewage was diverted and over 1,500 trees were planted in the bund area. The Fisheries Department has introduced approximately 5,000 of 5 different species of fish, including katla, tilapia and the common carp into the water.

The lake will need just three rain cycles to be restored to its past glory. For the people of the area, this serves as a great leisure and bird watching spot, said Brigade Group authorities.
