VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) aims to complete the desiltation of drainages before the monsoon hits the city to stop the spread of seasonal and communicable diseases.
The desilting works, a clean drive taken up every year before the onset of monsoon, has been completed in a majority of the places in the city. The municipal workers began desilting of side drains and all the 10 major drains, including Budameru canal, Nuzvid road drain, Nizam gate and outfall drains near Kabela.
Orders were issued for demolition of all illegal structures on the side drains to facilitate desilting works and complete them at the earliest. The residents, who live in slums and low-lying areas, are worried about seasonal diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya and others which spread commonly during rainy season.
Meanwhile, the medical and health wing officials said all measures have been taken to check the spread of viral diseases in slums and low-lying areas in the city. The health officials requested people not to litter in open places and warned that people caught doing so would be prosecuted under the Public Health Act.
They also appealed to the people to co-operate with them as desiltation of some drainages was still in progress. Assistant commissioner general Ch. Nagaraju said, “the job is half-done and the debris, mud, sludge on the roads is making it hard for pedestrians to pass through several areas in the city. We will remove the mud in the next few days,” he said.
