CPI’s Mahendran files nomination for bypoll

Party leaders accompanied him on a day when 10 other nominations were filed

Chennai: CPI candidate C. Mahendran on Tuesday filed his nomination for the R.K.Nagar by-poll, scheduled for June 27. Party leaders accompanied him in a low profile event, on a day when 10 other nominations, mostly by Independents, were also filed. According to the Chief Electoral Officer, Sandeep Saxena,  so far 27 persons had filed their nominations. Wednesday is the last date for filing nominations. Scrutiny will be taken up on Thursday.

Mr Saxena said the observer for expenditure, and surveillance teams were patrolling the constituency. So far there was  no seizure of unaccounted cash, he said.   Besides the CPI candidate, independents and others, R. Abraham Raja Mohan, P.N. Sri Ramachandran, M.L. Ravi, P. Ponraj , C. Maharajan, M. Gopi, V. Duraivel, M.S. Moorthy, M. Durairaj and N. Kumar also filed their nominations.

Meanwhile, the Chennai corporation starting examining the EVMs and facilities at the polling booths. At R. K. Nagar,  state ministers were campaigning for their party supremo, J. Jayalalithaa.
