THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Suicide bids by athletes continue to haunt the Sports Authority of India after the recent incident in which one died in a suicide pact in Alappuzha. Nidhin, 18, an athlete at the Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE) run by the SAI made an attempt to end his life by slashing his left-hand vein in the college hostel early on Wednesday. But he survived as he was rushed to the government medical college.
Nidhin, hailing from Chirayankeezhu, was referred to a psychiatric doctor, but he insisted on returning to the hostel, said sources. While he claimed that he made the suicide bid owing to examination fear, police sources said that he was facing an allegation of siphoning off funds collected from his college mates for buying sports kits and that he was even pulled up for it the other day.
A case was not registered in view of the Supreme Court ruling in the Irom Sharmila’s case not to register cases in suicide attempts. However, if there was any complaint regarding financial fraud, a case could be registered, said Kazhakuttam circle inspector K.S. Arun. The college authorities have initiated an internal inquiry into the incident. It may be recalled that four trainees of the SAI water sports centre in Alappuzha had tried to commit suicide claiming the life of one recently.
