Faizabad/New Delhi: A day after the dramatic arrest and subsequent resignation of Delhi law minister Jitender Singh Tomar in connection with alleged fake degrees, the RML Awadh University, from where he claimed to have graduated, on Wednesday denied having any such record.
A Delhi Police team took Mr Tomar to Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh and examined documents at the Awadh University Registrar’s office and the Saket Degree college and took them in sealed cover. Later, Mr Tomar was taken to Munger in Bihar.
In Lucknow, Mr Tomar on way to Faizabad maintained that the allegations against him were false. Mr Tomar, who quit as Delhi law minister after his arrest on Tuesday, claims to have done his BSc from Awadh University.
“My degree is absolutely genuine. It is a conspiracy by BJP and the Central government,” he said. Stating its willingness to cooperate with the ongoing probe into the case, the university stood by its earlier stand, saying Mr Tomar’s BSc degree was a forged one.
“One Pradeep Kumar had filed an RTI asking for verification of a set of documents related to Mr Tomar’s marksheets. The university had replied on January 22 that it did not have any such record. We stand by our previous stand,” its media in-charge S.N. Shukla said.
Mr Tomar had claimed to have completed his LLB from VNSL Studies, affiliated to Tilak Manjhi Bhagalpur University of Bihar. Latching on to the issue, the Congress demanded probe into Union minister Smriti Irani and Ram Shankar Katheria’s degrees.
Police focus on fakes racket:
Delhi Police is probing the possibility of an organised racket behind the alleged fake degrees of AAP leader Jitender Singh Tomar. “Our team has just reached Faizabad. There our Investigating Officer will take help of Mr Tomar in gathering evidence from there and whatever on-spot verification will be needed will be done,” Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. said.
“Whether he made them himself or he procured it from somewhere will be probed. It will be important to zero down on the person,” he said adding, “Our experience says that if a person makes such fraudulent documents, he doesn’t do it for single use.”
Kapil Mishra new minister:
Delhi Jal Board vice-chairman Kapil Mishra was named as the new law minister on Wednesday replacing Jitender Singh Tomar who had resigned from the post, following his arrest on charge of possessing fake degrees.
“I had a meeting with Arvind ji (Kejriwal) and have been informed about the development,” Mr Mishra, a first time MLA, said. Thirty-four-year-old Mr Mishra’s name was also doing rounds for a ministerial berth when AAP had won a landslide victory in February this year. However, he was made the vice-chairman of Delhi Jal Board at that time.
