Chennai: The Chennai corporation’s move to be more tech-savvy with the introduction of a mobile application for android-based phones appears to be quite a success. The application was introduced a few months ago but is awaiting the official launch. Sources say, “The app was introduced in April by the department of solid waste management following the Prime Minister’s ‘Swach Bharat’ campaign, for better functioning of civic activities in the city.

The initiative is also to rope in the residents of Chennai and keep them informed about the activities of the local body, besides showing transparency at work.” Citizens can post pictures of overflowing garbage and issues related to public toilets along with their comments and suggestions for better implementation of the existing system.

Action will be immediately taken on the complaints and these will also be posted in the app, the source said. Following the success of the app, there are plans to introduce apps for other civic services, including maintenance of streetlights, roads, bus shelters and parks. Plans are also on to link the app to complaint cell 1913, for redressel of issues in an organised manner.
The application also helps people to rate the activities of the corporation starting with No. 5 to indicate ‘very good’ up to No. 1 for ‘very bad’.
